This shampoo formulation is simple to prepare and it uses a combination of an anionic surfactant and a betaine. The formulation is thickened with sodium chloride to give a clear shampoo product with a viscosity of 6,000 to 10,000 mPa·s which is suitable for a shampoo. The viscosity of the formulation can be easily adjusted with sodium chloride. The formulator is advised to repeat this formulation with various levels of salt (0 to 2% wt) to obtain a desired viscosity. The addition of preservatives, dye and perfume will complete this economy shampoo that has high viscosity, copious foam and good after feel.
All ingredients are readily available from many manufactures
across the world.

Adjust the formulation to a desired pH 5 – 6.5 with Citric acid 50% solution
Total batch 100.0 grams
In a suitable formulation vessel, at room temperature and under steady mixing add all ingredients in the order listed. Mix well after each ingredient’s addition until the batch is uniform free of any lumps or particles.
This shampoo composition will be clear and with a Brookfield viscosity of about 6,000 to 10,000 mPa·s. Note that the viscosity of the shampoo can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the concentration of sodium chloride, item 5.
Variant 1. Add about 1% wt of a liquid pearlizing agent to confer a marble-like appearance to the shampoo.
Variant 2. Add glitter to change the appearance of the shampoo.
All ingredient amounts are given assuming the ingredients were supplied 100% pure. Formulators are advised to measure the total active mass of their ingredients and adjust the composition with water.
