Devices configured to permit the application of color to hair from a solid or semi-solid hair coloring composition and methods relating to use of such devices are disclosed. The device includes a support, and a solid or semi-solid hair coloring composition fixedly disposed on the support. The solid or semi-solid hair coloring composition includes a soap gelling agent such that the hair coloring composition retains its shape, and can be provided as a block having a predefined shape. These devices are not attendant with dripping as has been associated with prior art hair color applicators.

Provided are methods of reducing the irritation associated with a personal care composition comprising an anionic surfactant, the methods comprising combining a hydrophobically-modified material capable of binding a surfactant thereto with an anionic surfactant to produce a reduced irritation personal care composition, and methods of using such compositions to cleanse the hair or skin with reduced irritation.

The present invention relates to the perfumery industry. It concerns more particularly a .beta.-.gamma. unsaturated hindered ketone of formula ##STR00001## wherein R represents, simultaneously or independently, a C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 linear or branched alkyl group, and in the form of any one of its isomers, i.e. optical isomers or diastereoisomers, or of a mixture thereof. The use of the compound as a perfuming ingredient, as well as the perfumed articles or perfuming compositions that contain as an active ingredient a compound of formula (I), are also embodiments of the invention.

A support arrangement for a hair styling salon has a stanchion for forming a substantially central support member for an annular rim member. The annular rim member has notches along its periphery for accommodating respective skeins of braiding/weaving hair. Each notch is dimensioned to grasp a respective skein of braiding/weaving hair. A radial support arrangement configured as spokes that extend radially from the stanchion supports the annular rim member rotatably and removably on the stanchion. An elastomeric portion is annularly configured and arranged to overlie the annular rim, and has a plurality of slit-like notches that grasp resiliently and securely respective skeins of braiding/weaving hair.

A stress-release mold is described for casting thermosetting compositions especially compositions designed for consumer use. At least one wall of the mold includes a stress-releasing-element characterized by having a more flexible region or regions than the remaining wall or walls of the mold and wherein the stress-releasing-element includes a region of lower curvature at least partially surrounded by a region of higher curvature. The stress-release mold greatly reduces or eliminates surface defects caused by shrinkage of thermosetting compositions as they cools. A system is also described that includes the inventive mold containing a thermosetting composition wherein the mold also serves as all or part of the package for the composition.

Disclosed are personal care or cosmetic compositions comprising a dicarboxy functionalized polyorganosiloxane and methods for the cleaning or the treatment of hair or skin and for enhancing delivery of active agents to hair or skin with the compositions. Said personal care or cosmetic compositions can be formulated in a wide variety of types of products for the skin and/or hair (or, more generally, keratin) such as mousses, gels (in particular hair dressing gels), conditioners, hair dressing formulations or to aid comb-through of hair, rinsing formulae, hand and body lotions, skin moisturizing products, skin cleansing or disinfecting compositions, shower gels, toilet milks, cream foundations, make-up removal compositions, sun and ultraviolet radiation protection lotions, creams or gels, skin care creams, anti-age preparations, anti-acne preparations, local analgesics, mascaras, deodorants, antiperspirants, lipsticks and other compositions of the same type. The use of dicarboxy functionalized polyorganosiloxanes permits to confer benefits such as an increase in shine, gloss or volume of hair, easier comb-through of hair, easier spreadability or slipperiness onto skin; it also permits a better persistence of active materials or benefits agents deposited onto the surface and consequently permits to maintain the activity of the composition deposited on the surface over time. The dicarboxy functionalized polyorganosiloxane can be used in an amount of from about 0.1% to about 30%, preferably from about 3% to about 10% by weight, of said personal care or cosmetic compositions.

A hair setting instrument is provided which can set hair easily by supplying charges through a separate path. In concrete, the hair setting instrument comprises a mechanism for setting hair of a user, and an electrostatic charger which supplies charges to a body of the user for electrostatic charges generated by a movement for setting the hair. The electrostatic charger has a charging circuit which generates a predetermined voltage, and a charging plate electrically connected to the charging circuit. Wide spreading of the hair, electrostatic cling to the face or the like, dry hair, and the damage to the hair due to charging can be prevented. Further, for example, the body of hair can be decreased by supplying negative charges when the hair is charged with positive electrostatic charges.

The personal care composition for shaving is a pre-shaving conditioner for the skin and hair. The composition is water-based and includes aloe vera gel, vitamins A and E, an esterquat, preferably dipalmitoylethyldimonium chloride, and a thickener. A fragrance may be added to the composition if desired. The composition is applied to the area of skin that is to be shaven while in the shower. The composition should remain on the skin for at least two minutes and is then washed off. Once the composition is wiped off the skin, the user may shave in their traditional manner using a shaving cream or gel.

The present invention relates to the use of organomodified metallic nanoparticles preferably bearing at their surface a self-assembled monolayer of organosulphur compounds. A preferred use is in suspension form for dyeing and/or treating human keratin fibers. The invention also relates to a process for dyeing and/or treating human keratin fibers, by the application to the keratin fibers of such a suspension, and also to compositions used to perform such a process. The invention includes the colouring and/or treating of human keratin fibers, in particular the hair, with the invention suspension. Compositions of the nanoparticles with cosmetic active principles, and uses thereof, also are described.

Cosmetic compositions comprising, in a cosmetically acceptable medium, at least one aqueous emulsion of at least one silicone copolymer with a dynamic viscosity ranging from 1.times.10.sup.6 to 100.times.10.sup.6 cP and at least one associative thickener. This combination can give cosmetic properties, such as at least one of smoothness, lightness, and softness, without the phenomenon of regreasing keratin fibers. These compositions can be used for washing and/or conditioning a keratin material, such as the hair or the skin.

A cleansing composition, which comprises at least one phosphate surfactant, at least one foaming nonionic surfactant and at least one cationic polymer devoid of saccharide groups in an aqueous medium, the composition having the appearance of a transparent gel.

A personal care or cosmetic product composition that includes from about 0.1% to about 99% of at least one ester of alkoxylated aromatic alcohol and fatty carboxylic acid, and from about 0.1% to 60% of at least one functional ingredient is provided. The functional ingredients in the composition may include active ingredients and additional ingredients. Especially suitable active ingredients are sunscreen active ingredients and antiperspirant active ingredients. Preferred compositions are sunscreen product formulations and antiperspirant products. In one preferred embodiment, the composition further includes at least one cyclomethicone compound present in the amount of from about 1% to 99% by weight of the composition. A method of improving the protection of human or animal skin or hair from radiation and a method of improving the protection of human or animal skin or hair from perspiration are also provided.

The pulverulent composition is capable of being mixed with at least one aqueous hydrogen peroxide composition having a titre of not more than 40 volumes to form stable, homogeneous, bleaching compositions that can be applied precisely and easily, and can produce a homogeneous bleaching of the hair that does not leave the hair coarse.

- Diarylbutadiene-substituted diorganopolysiloxanes and photoprotective compositions comprised thereof

Novel 4,4-diarylbutadiene-substituted diorganopolysiloxanes having the structural formulae (1) or (2): ##STR00001## in which A is a radical of formula (3) below: ##STR00002## are useful sunscreens for UV-photoprotecting human skin against the damaging effects of UV-radiation, notably UV-A radiation.

- Insect repellent compounds

Dihydronepetalactone, a minor natural constituent of the essential oil of catmints (Nepeta spp.) such as Nepeta cataria, has been identified as an effective insect repellent compound. Synthesis of dihydronepetalactone may be achieved by hydrogenation of nepetalactone, the major constituent of catmint essential oils. This compound, which also has fragrance properties, may be used commercially for its insect repellent properties.

- Non-oxidative hair coloring using yogurt

A non-oxidative hair coloring composition, comprises yogurt or yogurt-derived material. The invention also provides a method of improving the coloring effects of non-oxidative hair coloring compositions, comprising application to the hair (during or after dyeing) of yogurt or a yogurt-derived material. The invention also covers use of yogurt or yogurt-derived material in a hair care composition for the purpose of improving the coloring effects of a non-oxidative hair dye. The invention can be put into effect by incorporating yogurt or yogurt-derived material into a hair care composition for use during non-oxidative dying of hair (i.e. a non-oxidative hair coloring composition) where it acts to improve dye deposition onto hair, or into a composition for use on hair after dyeing by a non-oxidative method, e.g. a shampoo or conditioner composition, to help maintain the color of dyed hair.

- Thermally resistant adhesive

A sol-gel material with metal particles which can be used as a conductive adhesive for systems that have a high operating temperature is disclosed. The material is especially suitable for appliances equipped with a flat heating element, such as steam irons.

- Composition and method to promote human hair growth

This invention relates to a composition of matter for producing hair growth and preventing hair loss in humans and the method for using said composition. The composition comprises four complexes and a carrier liquid, mixed together and added to any topical treatment or produced as an ingestible dietary supplement. Complexes 1, 2, and 3 are comprised of substances that prevent hair loss while Complex 4 promotes hair growth. Complex 1 is comprised of octyl butyrate and glutaminpeptides. Complex 2 comprises a mixture of minerals, plant extracts, vitamin B6, and linolenic acid. Complex 3 comprises a mixture of Ginkgo biloba extract, emu oil, a source of silicon, and a blend of amino acids. Complex 4 comprises a mixture of several plant extracts. The product should be used by the consumer at regular intervals, preferably 5 to 7 times per week in the form of a serum.

- Use of an oil of the gourd family for inhibiting 5 alpha-reductase activity

The invention concerns the use of at least an oil derived from the seeds of the gourd family selected from the group consisting of Lagenaria, Luffa and Momordica, for preparing a composition designed to inhibit 5.alpha.-reductase activity, and the use of said oil for preparing a composition for treating prostatic hypertrophy, prostatic adenoma, acne, hyperseborrhea, alopecia, and hirsutism. The invention also concerns cosmetic treatment methods, in particular for greasy skin. The invention further concerns the use of at least an oil derived from seeds of the gourd family in a nutritional food composition for humans and/or animals as additive for inhibiting 5.alpha. reductase activity.

- Perfume encapsulates

A perfume encapsulate comprises an aminoplast capsule, the capsule shell comprising urea-formaldehyde or melamine-formaldehyde polymer and a second polymer comprising a polymer or copolymer of one or more anhydrides, preferably ethylene/maleic anhydride copolymer. The second polymer improves the stability of the capsules with respect to surfactant, thus improving perfume retention properties and enabling use of the capsules in aqueous surfactant-containing products in a way that has not hitherto been possible.

The present invention relates to a process for the production of marine invertebrate type V telopeptide containing collagen preparations from marine invertebrates, compositions containing preparations, and methods of using these preparations. The present collagen preparations may be employed in a variety of products including for example, cosmetic, pharmacological, dental, and cell culture products.

- Methods and devices for applying hair extensions

A system for applying hair extensions to natural hair growing on the scalp of an individual comprises flared cylindrical tubes, a threading hook and a crimping tool. The threading tool is used to feed scalp hair through the flared tube. The hair extension is then inserted into the flared end or the tube and the tube is crushed flat trapping the threaded scalp hair and hair extension within the crushed structure. The removal of the hair extension is facilitated by use of a removal tool designed to open the crimped flared tube.

A composition containing an aqueous phase dispersed in an oily phase, at least one emulsifier with an HLB value ranging from 1 to 8, at least one organic powder, and, in the oily phase at least one semicrystalline polymer with organic structure that is solid at room temperature and that has a melting point of less than 70.degree. C., the said polymer comprising a) a polymer skeleton and b) at least one crystallizable organic side chain and/or at least one crystallizable organic sequence forming part of the said polymer skeleton, the polymer having a number-average molecular weight of greater than 2,000. This composition can especially constitute a cosmetic cream, having a very pleasant texture when applied to the skin, or a stick, especially a makeup-removing stick.

- Spiro compounds as perfuming ingredients

The present invention relates to the perfumery industry. It concerns more particularly an alcohol, ester, ether or ketone derivative having a spiro-type skeleton, the latter being substituted by short alkyl groups. The invention also relates to the use of the invention compounds as perfuming ingredients, able to impart a woody and/or aromatic, as well as to the perfumed articles or perfuming compositions comprising as active ingredient a compound of formula (I).

- Claw clip hair fastener

A multiple clip hair fastener that comprises three or more claw clips attached together by spacer bands. The spacer bands are substantially rigid and are attached to each clip in such a manner as to restrict the movement of each clip from moving out of alignment in at least one direction. The clips can move in an up and down direction and not a side by side direction; this allows each clip to be attached one at a time to the hair, while the other clips are kept up and out of the way, while continuing to stay in alignment.

- Mild, moisturizing cleansing compositions

Compositions used for cleansing hair and skin based on the combination of a sulfosuccinate surfactant and an amphoteric surfactant are described that are very mild but do not compromise in-use properties and economy. A route to solve the intrinsic instability of such aqueous compositions in storage has been developed based on the use of sulfosuccinic acid or a salt of sulfosuccinic acid present in an amount of at least about 4% based on the weight of the sulfosuccinate surfactant.

- Methods of assessing characteristics of fibrous substrates and treating fibrous substrates

A method of assessing damage of a fibrous substrate comprises the steps of: (a) providing said fibrous substrate having a length, a root end, and a tip end; (b) providing a means for assessing substrate moisture content; (c) using said means for assessing substrate moisture content to obtain at least a first measured moisture content value for said fibrous substrate at a first position along the length of said fibrous substrate and a second measured moisture content value for said fibrous substrate at a second position along the length of said fibrous substrate; (d) comparing said measured moisture content values with each other to obtain a measured moisture content differential; and (e) correlating said measured moisture content differential to a substrate damage value for said fibrous substrate. A method of treating a fibrous substrate comprises the steps of: (a) assessing damage of the fibrous substrate according to the method described above to obtain a correlated substrate damage value for the fibrous substrate; (b) using the correlated substrate damage value to select at least one appropriate substrate treatment composition; and (c) applying the appropriate substrate treatment composition to the fibrous substrate.

- Cleansing compositions comprising a liquid silicone and ester mixture

Cleansing compositions suitable for use in personal cleansing applications, and in particular make-up removal applications, which not only impart superior cleansing properties, but also which are relatively non-irritating and thus suitable for use by people having sensitive skin and eyes comprised of esters, liquid silicones, and a water dispersible components. Also disclosed are compositions for effectively depositing various benefit agents into and onto the skin.

- Hair drying/styling device

A hair drying/styling device which combines a uniquely designed rotating hairbrush and blow dryer into a single product. The present invention simplifies the popular styling technique of brushing hair while applying the blow dryer, by allowing the user to completely disregard the blow dryer, as this operation is automated by the product. The hair treatment composition for providing a flexible long-lasting hair fixing contains a combination of at least three film-forming, hair- fixing polymers. This hair treatment composition contains at least one amphoteric polymer, at least one anionic polymer and at least one nonionic vinyl lactam homopolymer or copolymer. The at least one amphotenc polymer is formed from at least one monomer, which has at least one neutralized or non-neutmlized acid group, and from at least one other monomer, which has at least one neutralized or non-neutralized amine group. The anionic polymer is built up from at least one radically polymerizable ethylenicaily unsaturated carboxylic acid, such as acrylic or methacrylic acid.

- Polymeric particles and fragrance delivery systems

Polymeric micro- and nano-capsules formed of a spherical single hydrophobic polymer, chemically functionalised at their surface so as to comprise hydrophilic moieties thereon are disclosed. The capsules are susceptible of absorbing a perfume and of being optionally coated with an amphiphilic copolymer. They allow the preparation of perfume delivery systems, which provide a slow release of perfuming materials while improving the substantivity of the perfume on a substrate.

- Natural sunlight photostable composition

The present invention relates to photostable compositions that provide protection from ultraviolet radiation ("UVR"). The invention particularly relates to the sunscreens avobenzone, octocrylene and oxybenzone, forming a triplet sunscreen combination. Compositions of the present invention are generally substantially free of substantial amounts of other sunscreens. The triplet combination surprisingly provides and substantially maintains the initial SPF value of the sunscreen composition throughout the period of UVR exposure. Compositions of the invention are photostable such that each of sunscreen active in the triplet combination does not appreciably photodegrade. The present invention accurately communicates the amount of UVR photoprotection actually provided in natural sunlight and minimizes the amount of potential harmful free radicals formed as byproducts of photodegradation.

- Hair curling device

A heatable hair curling device includes a plurality of hair curlers for winding up human hair and a thermally insulating carrier for retaining the curlers and insulating the curlers from heat loss prior to individual curler use. Each curler includes an elongate casing of flexible material having opposite first and second ends attachable to each other, a body, and an axial length. A heat absorbent material is contained within the body of each curler. The thermally insulating carrier has a length and includes an interior and an exterior piece of flexible heat-safe material. The interior piece of flexible heat-safe material is attached to the exterior piece of flexible heat-safe material. A center strap is disposed along the length of the interior piece the carrier and includes a lower and an upper piece of flexible heat-safe material. A heating element is contained between the interior and exterior pieces of flexible heat-safe material of the carrier and between the lower and upper pieces of flexible heat-safe material of the center strap.

- Contact-killing antimicrobial devices

Contact killing antimicrobial articles, devices and formulations are described which kill microorganisms on contact. The articles, devices or formulations contain a non-leaching antimicrobial material which is a unique combination of an organic matrix having biocidal metallic materials non-leachably associated with the matrix. The antimicrobial material may used to form an antimicrobial coating or layer on a surface of the article or device, or may be dispersed in a vehicle or carrier to form a topical antiseptic or disinfectant, or solid shape having contact killing antimicrobial properties. When a microorganism contacts the article, device, or formulation, the biocidal metallic material is transferred to the microorganism in amounts sufficient to kill it.

- Malodor counteractant compounds

A composition is provided for MOC that contains compounds with the structure: ##STR00001## wherein R.sup.1 is a hydrogen, an alkyl, an alkoxy, or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group; R.sup.2 is an alkyl having greater than 6 carbons, a substituted aryl, or unsubstituted aryl. Preferably these compounds have a low odor intensity. These compounds may be used with other MOC ingredients that act synergistically or additively with them.

- Silicone lubricating and conditioning compositions

The invention is directed to compositions that provide outstanding lubrication and conditioning to fibers. Key to the invention is the realization that the there must be (a) an alkoxylated silicone compound, and (b) a specific mono functional ester made from a capped polyoxyalkylene glycol compound. Combinations of these two specific materials properly chosen will result in lubricating and conditioning compositions that are effective and highly efficacious.

Water-soluble or water-dispersible, substantially air-impermeable, pharmacologically acceptable, liquid barrier compositions for treating ectoparasite infestations on animal skin and hair, wherein the compositions contain at least one monohydric aralkyl alcohol to prevent the ectoparasites from closing their respiratory systems, and wherein the compositions are free from pesticides.

A polymeric encapsulated fragrance is disclosed which is suitable for use in personal care and cleaning products. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the fragrance is encapsulated by a first polymer material to form a fragrance encapsulated polymer, the polymer encapsulated shell is then coated with a cationic polymer, preferably a cationic starch and guar.

The inventive cleansing preparation is made up of at least one dry acid, at least one dry base, and at least one liquid film-forming cleansing agent. When the cleansing preparation is exposed to water, the acid(s) and the base(s) will react to form a gas and the cleansing agent(s) will form a liquid film, and the gas and the liquid film will then interact to form or generate a foam. A method and system of conditioning human skin and hair using a hand- held skin/hair conditioner having interchangeable interface conductors that are contoured to enhance electrical conductivity between the conditioner and a variety of body areas. Each of the interchangeable interface conductors are preferably formed to maximize surface area contact with a variety of body surfaces such as scalp/hair, body skin, and facial skin. In a preferred embodiment, the skin/hair conditioner is formed to fit comfortably and controllably in a user's grasp while providing maximum contact with the selected body surface. The object of the invention is a hair-treatment agent in the form of a two-phase gel, containing comminuted particles of a firm and shape-retaining gel based on a carrageenan-containing aqueous base in a fluid polyol matrix. The gel is a clear product with properties of a hair wax or hair cream and it can be dispensed, sprayed or foamed from a suitable container by means of a propellant.

Optically activated particles for use in cosmetic and pharmaceutical compositions are disclosed. The present invention relates to photostable compositions that provide protection from ultraviolet radiation ("UVR"). The invention particularly relates to the sunscreens avobenzone, octocrylene and oxybenzone, forming a triplet combination. Compositions of the present invention are free of diesters or polyesters of naphthalene dicarboxylic acid and also are substantially free of substantial amounts of other sunscreens and substantial amounts of optimizing agents. Sunscreens of the invention may be essentially free of, or free of, lower monohydric alcohol and/or acrylates/C.sub.12-22 alkylmethacrylate copolymer in an effective non-pilling amount used to gel a C.sub.1-C.sub.4 alcohol. The triplet combination surprisingly provides and substantially maintains the initial SPF value of the sunscreen composition throughout the period of UVR exposure. Compositions of the invention are photostable such that each of sunscreen active in the triplet combination does not appreciably photodegrade. The present invention accurately communicates the amount of UVR photoprotection actually provided in natural sunlight.

Polyol polyester polymers are provided which are useful for personal care formulations and products containing such formulations. The polyol polyester polymers include a reaction product of at least one polyfunctional alcohol, at least one polyfunctional carboxylic acid and at least one monofunctional carboxylic acid, wherein the polyfunctional alcohol includes about two to about ten carbon atoms, the polyfunctional carboxylic acid includes one to about thirty-six carbon atoms and the monofunctional carboxylic acid includes about four to about twenty-four carbon atoms. Such polyol polyester polymers can have a dynamic viscosity at 25.degree. C. of about 200 to about 5000 centipoise and a hydroxyl value of about 40 to about 300 KOH/g.

Provided is a conditioner composition, which comprises a tertiary amine represented by the following formula (1): ##STR00001## wherein, R.sup.1 represents a linear or branched C.sub.6-24 alkyl or alkenyl group, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are the same or different and each represents a C.sub.1-6 alkyl group or a group -(AO).sub.nH (in which A represents a C.sub.2-4 alkylene group, and n stands for a number of from 1 to 6 with the proviso that n pieces of A are the same or different and are arranged in any order); or a salt thereof. The conditioner composition can impart fiber or hair with good suppleness and smoothness during wetting and after drying and is particularly excellent in imparting hair or fiber with smoothness after drying.

- Apparatus for laser depilation

An apparatus for laser depilation according to the present invention uses a semiconductor laser diode, which is controlled in respect of its energy level, thereby permitting an economical, effective and safe cosmetic treatment. The power output of light of the semiconductor laser diode ranges from 5 to 1500 mW, and the peak wavelength ranges from 600 to 1600 nm. The controller of the semiconductor laser diode comprises pulsating power output control means and radiation period control means for setting a desired length of time for radiation. With these control means the energy level of the beam of light from the laser may be so controlled that a strong beam of light may be thrown for a relatively short time, or that a weak beam of light may be thrown for a relatively long time. Thus, hairs of different thickness and colors can be removed.

- Wigs and methods of wig manufacture

Methods, apparatuses and systems directed to wigs and manufacturing them. Methods are described in which an attachment fiber, in certain embodiments having adhesive properties, is used to secure the hair to the wig base. In certain embodiments the attachment fiber's outer layer is melted to form an adhesive while the inner layer or layers are not melted and retain their strength. The attachment fiber can then be secured to the wig base in a way which permits the permanent setting of the hair's direction and is less visible than conventional methods at the hairline.

Preferably these compounds have a low odor intensity. These compounds may be used with other MOC ingredients that act synergistically or additively with them.

- Polyester based fiber and artificial hair using the same

The object of the invention is to provide polyester-based fiber which maintains physical properties of usual polyester fiber, such as heat resistance, strength and elongation and is excellent in setting ability with controlled gloss of the fiber, artificial hair using the same, a method of producing polyester-based fiber, and a method of producing artificial hair by using the same. To achieve the object, a composition obtained by melt-kneading polyalkylene terephthalate or a copolymerized polyester (A) based on polyalkylene terephthalate, polyarylate (B) and a phosphite compound (C) is melt-spun to form fiber. In the case of melt-kneading, the ester exchange reaction of components (A) and (B) is prevented due to the inhibitory effect of the component (C) on the ester exchange reaction, the heat resistance and physical properties of the fiber are not deteriorated, and a matte effect is brought about by formation of protrusions on the surface of the fiber.

C. and 80.degree. C., and to a process for the thermal remodelling of the hair using this composition.

The present invention relates to personal treatment compositions, which contain encapsulated perfume compositions, which release a burst of fragrance a period of time after initial topical application. According to the present invention, the burst of fragrance is released with the application of mechanical pressure on the encapsulated perfume composition. Further, the present invention relates to hair and skin compositions, which release a burst of fragrance a period of time after initial topical application by rubbing the skin or brushing the hair.

- Method for stimulating hair follicle cell proliferation

The present invention relates to novel hair follicle growth factor (HFGF) proteins, genes encoding HFGFs, methods for preparing HFGF proteins and therapeutic uses of HFGF proteins. The HFGF proteins of the present invention have a characteristic reduced expression in hair follicles derived from alopecia patients and have a stimulatory effect on hair follicle cell proliferation. HFGF proteins may be used to prevent or treat alopecia and to promote or accelerate hair growth and hair follicle repair.

A hair styling device with a stretchable, relatively long body portion extending between two ends thereof having a first end clasp member and a second end clasp member each provided at a corresponding one of the opposing ends thereof capable of being at least in part positionable about at least a part of the other. The first and second end clasp members each have a passageway therethrough into which a corresponding body portion end extends with the body portion ends each having a passage blocking object thereon, and being sufficiently narrow to prevent the body end extending therethrough with a blocking object thereon from passing through that narrow part. The blocking member can be a spherical shaped solid wedging the body portion ends into a tapered sides portion of the passageway in each clasp member.

- Toothed heated hair styling device and method of manufacture

A hair styling apparatus includes a pair of mating surfaces which engage one another and a handle which guides them into engagement at the manual control of a user. Hair to be styled is placed between the engaged surfaces. A plurality of pins extend from one of the surfaces and engage holes in the other of the surfaces. In another aspect of the invention, one or both surfaces may incorporate a source of dry heat. In yet another aspect of the invention, a source of steam is provided together with a trigger for discharging the steam through holes in at least one of the surfaces as an aid to hair styling.

The composition is usable as a leave-in hair care composition or a hair rinse, which conditions the hair and imparts luster and volume to the hair.

A personal care composition that includes a personal care ingredient and semiconductor nanocrystals. A method of protecting at least a portion of a body against ultraviolet radiation by applying a personal care composition is also provided.

The invention, a stable composition of matter, has a 2 step method to make (maintain the same equalities in increased batches). Step #1. 0.4167 Extra Virgin Olive Oil First Cold Pressed, which is a high quality olive oil, 0.5833 IPA, Isopropyl Alcohol 70%, shake to emulsify and create concentrate. Step #2 Using a 32 ounce empty plastic spray mist bottle, put 0.0625=2 ounces of contract from step #1. In plastic spray mist bottle, add 0.4375=14 ounces of tap water to plastic bottle, replace spray mist cap and shake. Suitable to Cross clean, the human body, plants leaves, natural and man-made finished products, fine ash particle controller, controls ash from becoming air borne. In addition the composition of matter cleaning solution will use minimal amounts of water in the cleaning and particle control process.

- Isotactic propylene copolymer fibers, their preparation and use

Fibers comprising a propylene homopolymer or a copolymer of propylene and at least one of ethylene and one or more unsaturated comonomers exhibit desirable properties. The homopolymers are characterized as having .sup.13C NMR peaks corresponding to a regio-error at about 14.6 and about 15.7 ppm, the peaks of about equal intensity. The copolymers are characterized as (A) comprising at least about 60 weight percent (wt %) of units derived from propylene, and (B) having at least one of the following properties: (i) .sup.13C NMR peaks corresponding to a regio-error at about 14.6 and about 15.7 ppm, the peaks of about equal intensity, (ii) a B-value greater than about 1.4 when the comonomer content of the copolymer is at least about 3 wt %, (iii) a skewness index, S.sub.ix, greater than about -1.20, (iv) a DSC curve with a T.sub.me that remains essentially the same and a T.sub.max that decreases as the amount of comonomer in the copolymer is increased, and (v) an X-ray diffraction pattern that reports more gamma-form crystals than a comparable copolymer prepared with a Ziegler-Natta (Z-N) catalyst.

The present invention models hairs by generating hairs by interpolation and then further modifying the interpolated hairs to form clumps. The modified hairs can be iteratively reprocessed to generate more hairs and thereby produce a greater level of detail in the resulting hairstyle. The invention can be used to model any tubular structures protruding from a surface, such as strands of fur protruding from an animal's skin and blades of grass or stems of plants protruding from the ground.

Topically applicable cosmetic/dermatological photoprotective compositions contain at least one dibenzoylmethane UV-screening agent, and, as a photostabilizer therefor, at least one arylalkyl benzoate compound of formula (I) or (II) below: ##STR00001## with the proviso that: (i) the subject compositions are characteristically devoid of any octyl methoxycinnamate; and (ii) same are other than a solution of butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane in 2-phenylethyl benzoate, 2-phenylethyl o-toluate, 2-phenylethyl p-toluate or in a 2-phenylethyl o-toluate/2-phenylethyl p-toluate (1/1) mixture.

The polymer coating on the composite is then irradiated with an electron beam, thereby scissioning chains in the cured polymer. - Nonviscous aqueous dispersion compositions of water-swellable layered silicates and the method of producing the same

Concentrated suspensions of smectite clays are obtained as either relatively "thin" or highly shear-thinning slurries that are easy to pump, by adding one or more of certain cationic polymers whose weight average molecular weight, Mw, is 50,000 or higher. It was found during the course of the invention that a cationic polymer with an Mw of 10,000 did not work, while the same polymer with a bimodal Mw of 50,000 and 30,000 worked satisfactorily. To achieve the full advantage of the present invention, the cationic polymer preferably has 1 to 10 milliequivalents of cationic charge per gram of the polymer, and more preferably 5 to 10 milliequivalents of cationic charge per gram of the polymer, and most preferably 6 to 8 milliequivalents of cationic charge per gram of the polymer.

A hair iron that can set hairstyles by heating and spraying a treatment agent comprises a pair of holding parts (1, 1); each having heating block (2), the surface of which acts as a holding surface (7); at least one holding part (1) containing liquid container (5), liquid holder (4) that brings the liquid in liquid container (5) in contact with heating block (2) as the liquid in liquid container (5) is transferred to heating block (2), and steam path (19) that sprays from holding surface (7) the steam generated as the liquid transferred from inside liquid container (5) is heated by the contact surface with heating block (2) of liquid holder (4). Hair is held between the holding surfaces (7, 7) of the pair of holding parts (1, 1), and under the action of the steam sprayed from the steam path (19), the hairstyle is set. In this hair iron (40), the liquid container (5) is set on the side of the heating block (2) opposite to the holding surface (7), and at the same time, the liquid holder (4) is set between the heating block (2) and the liquid container (5).

- Finely divided photoprotective oil-in-water emulsions comprising 4,4-diarylbutadiene UV-A sunscreens

UV-Photoprotective oil-in-water emulsions well suited for photoprotecting the skin, lips and/or hair against the damaging effects of UV-radiation, the oil globules of which having an average size of at most 500 nm and containing particles of at least one ionic polymer and at least one UV-radiation-screening system, such screening system comprising at least one 4,4-diarylbutadiene UV-A-screening agent.

- Fragrance delivery system for surface cleaners and conditioners

We claim a fragrance delivery system consisting of a mixture of various polymers oligomers and stabilizers capable of forming a surfactant complex gel dispersion when combined with a cleansing surfactant base and yielding high levels of fragrance deposition onto the skin, hair or other surface such as a textile, from a cleansing or softening consumer product comprising a micelle forming surfactant. The internal phase or dispersible phase of this surfactant complex gel dispersion (GLPPD) is made of a mixture of various immiscible polymers, oligomers and stabilizers forming a complex gel with the surfactant platform and whose ratio and composition are selected to dissolve preferentially a wide range of fragrance raw materials. The selection criteria are, first, that the fragrance should present a higher fragrance partitioning ratio into the surfactant complex gel phase than into the free micelles of the surfactant, second, that the surfactant complex gel should not be further solubilized by the free micelles, and third, that the polymer mixture selected should complex with the surfactant system. The external or dispersing phase of the GLPPD is made of a single cationic polymer or a mixture of cationic polymers that have been hydrated and associated with the surfactant to form a complex gel structure that cannot be further solubilized by the free micelles.

- Compositions and methods for treating hair loss using non-naturally occurring prostaglandins

A method for treating hair loss in mammals uses compositions containing prostaglandin F analogs. The compositions can be applied topically to the skin. The compositions can arrest hair loss, reverse hair loss, and promote hair growth.

Superior conditioning is obtained by providing a cationic polymer to the hair while it is subjected to the oxidising treatment, and then the oxidised hair is subjected to a conditioning treatment with a composition comprising a functionalized silicone.

- Microemulsions, especially for skin or hair treatment

The preferably optically clear, transparent or translucent micromulsion contains from 20 to 60 percent by weight water; from 3 to 20 percent by weight of an oil phase, which contains hydrophobic oil that is liquid at 25.degree. C. and optionally dissolved lipophilic materials, and from 20 to 60 percent by weight of an emulsifier mixture. The emulsifier mixture contains at least one first emulsifier, which is an ethoxylated castor oil and/or an ethoxylated hydrogenated castor oil, and at least one second emulsifier with an NRU.sub.50 value greater than 110 .mu.g/ml. The microemulsion is usable as a cosmetic, dermatological or pharmaceutical preparation, especially as an agent for hair treatment.

A toy figure assembly and its method of manufacture. The toy figure has a body structure with an exposed exterior. The exposed exterior of the figure includes at least one first section of fabric material and at least one second section of elastomeric gel material that are joined together along at least one common seam. The common seam can be closed using adhesive, heat bonding or sewing. The sections of the toy figure defined by fabric material are filled with dry fill. The sections of the toy figure defined by elastomeric gel material can be filled with either dry fill or a fluid fill. By forming a toy figure from both fabric material and elastomeric gel, a toy figure is obtained that has external areas having contrasting tactile characteristics, thereby increasing the play value of the toy figure.

- Associative thickeners for aqueous systems

Thiocarbonate compounds which, in one embodiment, are utilized as a rheology modifier or associative thickener. The thiocarbonate compounds thicken or increase the viscosity of a composition, preferably an aqueous composition when used in an effective amount. In one preferred embodiment, the thiocarbonate compounds include at least one hydrophilic group containing repeat unit such as derived from acrylic acid, and at least one hydrophobic group to enhance association with other compounds and thus increase viscosity of a composition. Aqueous composition comprising a latex and thiocarbonate associative thickeners are described.

- Peptide tags for the expression and purification of bioactive peptides

Peptide tags, referred to here as inclusion body tags, are disclosed and are useful for the generation of insoluble fusion peptides. The fusion peptides comprise at least one inclusion body tag operably linked to a peptide of interest. Expression of the fusion peptide in a host cell results in a product that is insoluble and contained within inclusion bodies in the cell and/or cell lysate. The inclusion bodies may then be purified and the protein of interest may be isolated after cleavage from the inclusion body tag.

- Photostable photoprotective compositions comprising dibenzoylmethane and bis-resorcinyl triazine compounds and a compound that accepts the excited triplet level energy of said dibenzoylmethane(s)

Topically applicable, improvedly photostabilized, photoprotective cosmetic/dermatological compositions contain (i) an effective UV-screening amount of at least one dibenzoylmethane sunscreen and an effective photostabilizing amount of (ii) at least one bis-resorcinyl triazine compound and (iii) at least one compound accepting the excited triplet level energy of said at least one dibenzoylmethane sunscreen, notably at least one 4-hydroxybenzylidenemalonate compound, 4-hydroxycinnamate compound, fluorene compound, piperidinol salt, or mixture thereof, formulated into (iv) a topically applicable, cosmetically/dermatologically acceptable support therefor.

A hair treatment composition that includes an aqueous formulation of leleshwa. The aqueous formulation of leleshwa is obtained by subjecting leleshwa to a steam distillation process to remove essential oils therefrom. The aqueous condensate phase from the steam distillation process is recovered and used as the aqueous formulation of leleshwa according to the present invention. The aqueous formulation of leleshwa is used alone as a rinse to treat hair or combined with other ingredients to form hair treatment compositions that include rinses, conditioners, shampoos and combinations thereof.

The U-shape may be subject to a variety of mechanical changes, for example, making an opening bigger or. smaller, or changes in the angle of the headrest itself so that it better fits the counter of a patient's head. Such changes may be made through manual, pneumatic, or electrical control, or combinations thereof.

- Polymeric thickeners for oil-containing compositions

Thickeners for oil-containing compositions, particularly cosmetic and personal care compositions, are side chain crystalline polymers which are uniformly dispersed as a crystallized solid in the oil.

The present invention is directed to a class of polyesters that are lightly crosslinked polyesters made by reacting polysorbate units (linked by the reaction of their hydroxyl groups) to the carboxyl group of dimer acid. The present patent application relates to a cleansing composition comprising in an aqueous medium at least one surfactant selected from alkylpolyglycosides, maltose esters, glycerolated fatty alcohols, N-alkylglucamine derivatives, amido ether carboxylates, acetates, alaninates, aspartates, glycinates, citrates, galacturonates, fatty acid salts constituting soaps, phosphates, amphoteric and zwitterionic surfactants, and at least one amphiphilic polymer comprising at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a sulphonic group in free form or in partially or totally neutralized form and comprising at least one hydrophobic portion. The composition can especially constitute a foaming composition that has a good volume of foam by virtue of the presence of the amphiphilic polymer. The composition of the invention may especially be used in cosmetology or dermatology, as a cleansing product or make-up-removing product for the skin, the scalp and/or the hair.
